Retirement Rebels: Shayne Brodie
The latest in my series of interviews with ‘Retirement Rebels’ features Shayne Brodie, an Instagram influencer, a.k.a. ‘Ms Silver Linings’ who advocates style at any age and is known for what she calls her ‘silver disobedience’.
She’s also a model with Colours Agency and you might have seen her in advertising campaigns for well-known fashion brands. She couldn’t fit into my Retirement Rebellion ethos any more if she tried…
I ask my rebels the same quick-fire questions, and we’re getting some inspiring responses. Have a look back at my other interviews and discover how these rebels have found a life of purpose at retirement age: something that I can help you do in my upcoming online course, ‘Dare to Discover Your Purpose’.
Shayne uses the hashtag on Instagram ‘#justgettingstarted’: I love this. If you’re just getting started too, and you’d like to be part of this series yourself, email me at [email protected].
Do you consider yourself retired – and if not, why not?
No, not at all: far too much more to do and I’m having far too much fun!
How do your thoughts on retirement differ from most people – in other words, what makes you a retirement rebel?
I do feel like in a way I have retired from my former life, but now I seem to have reinvented myself, as an article in a newspaper once called me a supermodel with a bus pass – hilarious! I love a bit of ‘Silver Disobedience’!
Do you have a typical day? What does it look like?
I don’t have a typical day, which is one of the things I adore about my life. I do have two daughters and a dog that always figure in my day at some point, as well as speaking with my agent, and doing my social media.
If it’s a shoot day it’s usually a very early start and involves travel. I’ve worked with some very talented and fun people, so it doesn’t seem like work at all.
What’s been your proudest moment since you turned 50?
Being on the cover of a magazine… Not bad for 62.
Do you have a favourite quote that inspires you?
The harder you work, the luckier you get.
What’s your favourite social media channel, and what was the last thing you posted on it?
Definitely Instagram, the last thing I posted was an image from a shoot from a bridal magazine Scottish Wedding Magazine
If you could tell your 18 year old self one thing, what would it be?
Worry less, relax more.
When did you last belly-laugh, and what was it about?
Yesterday at my daughter’s Tik Tok. Just thinking of it makes me howl!
Do you have any regrets?
Yes, worrying too much. As they say, “Worrying does not take away tomorrow’s troubles. It takes away today’s peace”.
What are your aspirations for retirement – and above all, what do you wish to be remembered for?
I just want to keep on doing what I’m doing for as long as it’s fun and I keep being asked. But most of all, I want to be remembered for being kind.
